Who doesn’t love a road trip? Whether you’re a visitor to the city or a local Londoner looking for a family weekend away, there’s plenty of countryside around London to explore like Stonehenge or Bath, or even further afield, like a visit to Scotland. Before hitting the motorway though, there’s a number of things you’ll need to prepare for. If you’re travelling with children, a car seat is essential to ensure that your children are safe inside your car at all times.
Most car rental companies in London, like Drivenow for example, will offer you child seat options on each rental car so you can be 100% sure of your children’s safety when you travel. Car rentals also assist you with different size of car seats to suit your children’s age and height. Here’s a few tips to choosing the perfect car seat for your kids.
Review your car’s manual first
Prior to purchasing or renting a car seat for your child, read the car’s manual. This is to find out where the car seat should be put and how it will be installed. Car seats can be attached using the seat belt or the LATCH (Lower Anchors and Tethers for Children) system. Knowing this, it will be easier for you to decide on what car seat you should hire or buy.
Measure your back seat
Always take into consideration how many and who will sit in the back seat or if you’re going camping with the wee bub, how much gear will be stashed in the back with the baby. You have to measure the back seat as well before shopping for a car seat as some car seats are bulky and may not fit comfortably.
Consider your child’s height, age, and weight
For infants or newborns, it is strongly recommended that they ride in rear-facing seats as this is the safest position. Forward-facing seats are recommended for children aged at least 2 years or above, or those who have reached the maximum weight or height capacity of the car seat. Lastly, the booster seat can be used for kids weighing more than 40 pounds.
Pick something easy to clean
As every parent knows, children and mess often go together. Pick a low maintenance, easy to clean car seat, preferably with removable covers so you can throw them into the washing machine. Simple lines and curves with few nooks and crannies will make vacuuming out biscuit crumbs and wiping down split drinks much easier.
Once you’ve gotten the car seat for the kids, book some accommodation, pick up a map, stash in a snacks, and you can be on your way on the road!
